This is an interesting How to Make a Fire Picture!! This offering was scanned from a Circa 1879 Science book filled with all sorts of interesting illustrations of Inventions! This black and white Engraving shows the hands of two Men using Wood, a Bow of some sort, and a piece of Flint perhaps? … in order to start a Fire. You can see that the wood is already starting to smoke in the picture. This one makes me think of Survivorman! You might also like another Image from the Same Book you can find that one HERE.

  1. I think this is called a bow drill, though I’m not sure what the second person is adding; perhaps tinder. If they had a flint, they wouldn’t need to go to the trouble of using a bow drill. We have it so easy now, cooking at the flick of a knob, or pressing a few buttons.

  2. Thanks Karen – I could see this being used for steam punk too.
