This one may not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought these were so interesting, and I promise to post something pretty tomorrow!! Todays graphic images are from an early book, published in London in 1808, called “The Grave – A Poem“, and they are so beautifully done. The top image features a young woman’s soul leaving her body, such an unusual art subject! The second one is rather macabre, and shows a man with a horn hovering over a skeleton, this one is the title page. I have to admit, for the sake of modesty, I altered the man a bit, by adding the leaf. I would have liked to have added a fig leaf, but all I could find was a Maple leaf. Quite fitting for the Fall season though I think! Hopefully you won’t be irritated by my alteration, but I try to keep it family friendly here.

These are odd and neat at the same time. I wanted to say thank you for the BOO banner. I made one and posted it on my blog. (linked your blog) Check it out if you get a chance, I had the best time making it with my 4 year old. I tried the McLinky but time was up… Love your site!

How interesting they are. I’ve never seen anything like them. Both of the spirit figures are curved, too, which is interesting.
Your images are always a treat!

Karen, thank you so much for stopping by Rook No. 17 and for your wonderful, heartwarming, ego-boosting comments! I am honored! I just put a fire in the fireplace, made a nice hot cup o’ tea, and imagine I’ll be spending the rest of the evening in graphics heaven, browsing your site. Regards, Jenn

Hi Karen, I couldn’t sleep so was browsing for some medical images and was popped across to your website which I have as one of my favourites on my blog. It is about 2.18 am here in Sydney Australia and I came upon these two images and then I glanced down at what you had written and I could not stop laughing. You are so funny. I had to read it again and then check out the maple leaf. I had no idea it had been modified if it could fit under that little maple leaf but I just loved your comment after all you want to keep the site family friendly. I just love your witty sense of humour and of course your fabo website. If you ever have a problem finding something give me a bell at [email protected] because I have gigs and gigs of graphics and if I don’t have it I know where to find it lol. Cheers Julz

These are really neat, but I don’t think that’s the woman leaving her body.
Notice that
1. She is a woman.
2. The dead guy is a man.
Different hair and a distinct lack of …um… bosom.
I think it is the original publisher’s mistake. Notice that they picture is marked by “W. Blake” as in William Blake? If that’s true, then yeah, probably not meant to be a picture to go with that fru-fru (sp?) poem. He had some seriously morbid poems. Looks like some publisher took his picture and tried to make a little cutesie thing! Blake would be rolling in his grave! I can see them trying to reuse his art – but it’s weird that they didn’t mind taking what is clearly a woman over a man and trying to pretend it’s a woman over her own body. Very weird.
