This beautiful DIY Butterfly Sideboard was submitted by one of my readers, Vikki, using my new submissions page, isn’t it stunning?
Vikki painted an old sideboard in gold, then rubbed over all of areas that she wanted gold to show through with an old candle. She then coated the sideboard with a black emulsion. She used a damp cloth to distress it. She then applied some of my Butterfly Graphics using a PVA and water solution, then coated the piece with a layer of varnish. She also replaced the door handles and sprayed them with a black enamel spray.
I love the way it turned out, Vikki! You can see more on Vikki’s facebook page, Tatty to Natty Furniture, HERE!

Such a beautiful sideboard! Loving all of her pieces, actually. Was wondering if anyone could tell me what the “black emulsion” she applied might be? I know latex paint is called emulsion in the UK… could it be that simple? Just a black latex paint??
Karen Watson says
Hi Mary,
Yes, she is in the U.K., so black emulsion would be the same as black paint!
