Hi there, hope you are all having an amazing Summer. It’s a great time for fun projects and hopefully you might give today’s idea a try. When I saw Karen’s new vintage fox the other day and saw how much she loved it I thought hmm….this would make a perfect chalkboard so I decided to make her one and share the DIY with you. The best thing is that anyone of the graphics here at The Graphic Fairy can be used as an outline…so maybe this will get you to look at the images in even a different way!
You start by finding the image that you love and making a simple template…no high quality print…you can even use the economy print…cut it out..
and trace it onto either foam core…mdf…pine or any other choice you may have. If you are using foam core you will be able to cut it out with an exacto knife and then there is a hand saw or a ban saw to cut it out of wood.
Now sand your piece until nice and smooth.
It’s time to start applying the chalkboard paint. I love Benjamin Moore chalkboard paint…I have tried many and by far it is my favorite.
Once your wood is painted with the first coat…allow to dry or speed things up a bit with a blow dryer…an essential crafting tool : )
When the first coat is dry…lightly sand and apply another coat …repeat and add a third coat and then you are done…3 coats is perfect.
Time to add a little embellishment if you would like…I thought that a black and white stripped bow was the perfect touch…if you are going to hang your piece…add the hanger in the back and voila…a Foxy Chalkboard or any shape you can dream of! These make incredible gifts!
