Altered Book Junk Journal
Hey guys. One of our awesome Junk Journal Design Team Members, Kelly Boler from Book and Paper Arts, has created an amazing Altered Book Junk Journal for us this month. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal each week created by one of our team of fantastic book artisans. Our goal is for you to be totally inspired by this series! Make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…you need to scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will let Kelly tell you all about her book…
Reflecting for New Year
For my new junk Journal, I decided to turn an Altered Book into a diary for reflections as we go into the new year. I started with an old book ‘How to Read a Topographical Map’ that I bought at a thrift store, then used a variety of techniques to change its appearance into something wholly different: part life coach, part diary, and part mixed-media collage. Of course, I was inspired by the amazing graphics and ephemera from The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site.
New Year’s is always my favorite time of the year, as it is a time for reflection of the time that has past and an opportunity to consider what is to come and set goals. For this, I made tags, cards, and envelopes filled with handwritten prompts throughout the journal.
Prompts Tucked Into Pockets
These prompts are mainly in the form of questions meant to provoke thoughts and stimulate writing that will clarify creative ideas and guide goal-making. To make space for written responses, I added tea-dyed, Claire Fontaine graph (quadrille) paper as well as vintage ledger pages tucked into a pocket.
In altering the book, some pages were removed while others were glued together. Others were half-torn to make stubs so that I could tip in the envelopes, incorporating them into the bound pages. Elements such as stiffened cheesecloth and mulberry paper were also added.
On other pages stencils, inks, tea bags, collage, and other mixed media techniques were used to make original layouts that also suggest renewal or other connections to writing and contemplation.
Image Transfer on Junk Journal Pages
I played around with image transfers on this junk journal. Below you can see the detail of a junk journal spread with image transfers. I will be using this more in the future.
Premium Bundle Images Used
I used images from the Premium Membership Bundles Shakespeare Women 2, Celestial Images, and Owls and Mushrooms, and Natural History Birds. I also used many of the Premium Membership premade tags and envelopes from: Flower Mini-File Folders, Gift Pocket (with poppies), Steampunk ATC Cards, Envelope For Father’s Day Card (playing card), Envelope for 3 1/2 x 4 7/8 Card (French postcard collage), and Mini Envelopes for ATC Cards (maps).
Altered Book Junk Journal Flip Through Video
I could go on and on, but I think you might want to view my flip through video for a more in-depth look at Altered Book Junk Journal on The Graphics Fairy YouTube channel. We have other great Junk Journal videos there also.
