Bee Lover’s Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Jennifer Carroll of Celebrating Everyday Life, one of our amazing NEW Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Bee Lover’s Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Jennifer introduce herself, and tell you all about her lovely project…
Hello friends, I’m Jennifer Carroll from CelebratingEverydayLife.com and I’m so excited to share my Bee Junk Journal which I created with images from the Secret Life of Flowers bundle in the Graphics Fairy Premium Membership Area. As soon as I saw this bundle I knew I wanted to create something with it. I’m a big fan of bees and flowers so this was a match made in heaven.
I decided to use an old cereal box as the base and created a collage using elements from the bundle plus a book cover image which is also included in the premium membership area. This gave it a warm and slightly worn look that was just right.
I also collaged some images together for the inside of the cover. If you are new to graphic design and are interested in learning how to make your own collages you’ll definitely want to check out the wonderful tutorials that are in the premium section too. There is a treasure trove of how-tos in there!
The inside pages are a mix of designs from the bundle plus some hand-dyed papers I made with coffee and other natural, non-toxic dyes. I also mixed in some fun elements like a paper bag, doily, vellum and even a catalog page torn from a David Austin rose guide. Having a mix of pages like this helps to give the journal extra interest.
And then the embellishing began! I used a few printables from the Graphics Fairy site – both free and premium – to make some pockets and I also used the Hope quotes printables to sprinkle some encouragement throughout the entire book.
The design team has created some sweet ready-to-print designs from this collection that they call Altoid tin cards – I used these as sweet accents throughout. They add cheery spots of color and act as great spots for notes too.
There are a variety of ribbons scattered throughout which help add texture – there are crochet styles, finer lace, and even burlap mixed in.
I also added a few metals, sparkles, and pearls throughout – these add feminine charm and extra interest to the overall journal. My best advice when you’re creating a journal is to be playful – don’t worry too much about any “rules.” It’s your journal – you can make it as fussy or simple as you wish, and by playing with mixing elements like washi tape with pearls and paper bags, who knows – you might just make your favorite page of all!
I also like to mix in a few un-expected elements – for me in this journal those include a bee wax seal and two tiny golden bees dangling in the center. Normally I would add something with a little less dimension but these bees were so precious I wanted to include them somehow, someway. And, since they’re so petite, I had to be careful that they wouldn’t just get overlooked anywhere else, so the center of the signature made the most sense.
I hope you enjoy this journey into a secret garden of bees and blooms, and a generous helping of color and charm to encourage you on your journey!
