Floral Portraits Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Valerie Burton of Little Maine Cottage, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Bird Studies Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Val introduce herself and tell you all about her incredible project…
This vintage-style junk journal is also the 3rd installment in The Day Ledger Series. I was inspired to create Bird Studies because, for many years now, I have loved watching the wild birds so numerous on our property, even making notations of special sightings in a small journal, as well as researching related facts. We even had the privilege of caring for a tiny abandoned baby bird
who was eventually returned to the wild. But that is a whole different story.
I also had an antique photo in my collection of what I believe to be a father and son bird-watching together. I combined this along with my stash of found vintage bird themed ephemera and so I had lots of creative joy amalgamating these things with many of the beautiful images from the Premium Membership site. Bird Studies is made using a found vintage mid-century book cover in dark blue with beautiful debossing. The measurements are 10 inches in height x 7.5 inches in width and it has a spine depth of 1.5 inches which accommodates three signatures made up of approximately 116 page sides. In addition, there are five notebooks constructed in various sizes placed within. Materials used are antique, vintage, and contemporary papers and fabrics as well as vintage laces, cording, glass beads, metal pieces which include a hitch-post, eyelets, brads, corner protectors, along with a tiny birdhouse charm. The finished piece is quite hefty, weighing well over three pounds.
Left: Wanting to create some type of identity card, I used a print of a blank album page and the Steampunk Apothecary Kittie Hempstead image to a small size, adhered them together and framed with photo corners. I used fussy-cuts of roses from the Ephemera Romance bundle to decorate the page.
Right: I fussy-cut birds from the Delft Blue Ephemera Envelopes and applied these to the large journal card made from a book page. I used a finch image to create a smaller journal card and constructed a little book from the Central Park Bird Watchers bundle.
Left: I fussy-cut a blue bird from the Central Park Bird Watchers bundle and applied to the page. Right: I used Spring Blue Bird Wave Endpaper along with a fussy-cut of Black Headed Bunting. The pocket is made from Oval Rose Hydrangea Frame.
Left: I applied a fussy-cut of a blue bird Watcher to the antique page. Right: I used a music copver print as a page along with a fussy-cut of a Crimson Bullfinch from the Birds and Botanicals bundle.
Left: The center fold of this antique page is supported with a strip of paper made out of Little Women White Poppy Wallpaper. I printed a beautiful French check from the French Ephemera Collection bundle and slipped into the pocket as a journaling space.
Right: This page is constructed using Green Leaf Endpaper combined with Rustic Tattered Bird page and decorated with a white rose fussy cut from the Ephemera Romance bundle. I created a journal card using a title page print from the Sage Meadows bundle, placed in the pocket made from an antique bird engraving.
Left: I constructed a shallow pocket using a blue cloth endpaper print and slipped in a journal card from the Rose is a Rose bundle. Right: This page is a pocket page made from Rose Bird paper. I used a printable from the Cafe au Lait Hues bundle made into a small pocket in which a tiny notebook, constructed from a mini-collage print from the French Boutique Ephemera bundle printed on brown paper, is housed.
Left: I printed one of the prints from the Spring Endpapers bundle on brown paper and combined this with a ledger paper and a journal pocket, both from the Paper Stash bundle to create this page.
Right: I folded a full size print of an index sheet in the Book Lover bundle and placed in the pocket along with a vintage catalog page and an antique engraving.
Left: I combined a print from the Spring Endpapers bundle with a pretty bird image on parchment paper. Right: I adhered one of the bird shapes from the Botanist’s Field Guide with a swaloow shape printed on vintage ledger paper.
Left: I printed this blue eggs image to create a journal card. Right: I adhered fussy-cut images of a bird from the Misty Forest Morning bundle and a pink Cameila flower together on a vintage book page.
Left: I created two journal cards. One out of a book cover from the Birds and Nest Ephemera bundle and the other from an image from the Weathered Lace bundle and slipped them into the shallow tuck. Right: Behind the vintage bird page is, a tiny paperclip holds a portion of a print from the Delicate Enadpapers bundle, collaged with a strip of a fern lace script print.
Left: I fussy-cut an image from the Winter Bird Bundle and applied it to the large ledger page. To create a pocket page for a journal card, I used an endpaper print.
Right: I used endpaper prints and two antiqued bronze brads to construct a small flip-style notebook with a gusseted pocket on the interior of the back board which holds an envelope from the Mini Ephemera bundle for slipping in extra notes. I made the pages with egg prints from the Ornithologist bundle and used prints from the Vintage Paperie bundle on the reverse for vintage style blank spaces in which to journal.
