Cabinet of Curiosities Junk Journal
Hey everyone. Design Team member Anna Hollingworth of Leximbue Journals created a fabulous Cabinet of Curiosities Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series! Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Anna tell you all about her wonderful project…
I have wanted to create a Cabinet of Curiosities and a Journal to go with it for a long time. What a thrill it was for me to see it posted on the Graphics Fairy website!
I started with the cabinet. I chose the ephemera that I would use and I focused especially on the new Cabinet of Curiosities bundle. I also loved using Poe’s bundle especially as I believe the two go very well together!
I created the shelves according to the sizes of the ephemera. I created a 3D effect by adding frames and stands on the pieces.
The journal size had to be an A4! I wanted it to have plenty of space for decorating. The cover I used is a marbled paper book cover printable. This particular one has a very classic look about it. I cannot believe how well it printed out. As always, I used a textured ivory paper because it looks like the real thing – or even better.
I painted the linen spine the same color as the original leather which shows on the corners of the cover. I added a little gold to it as a complement to what is there already.
While opening the journal one sees an eye on an intensely coffee and tea stained page, adding to the mystery of this theme.
I created a transparent pocket for a butterfly plate illustration and added a glassine bag on the other page with a specimen tag inside.
An Assemblage of various curiosity images adds to the obscurity with quotes from Poe, specimen jar images and creatures from the Masquerade bundle.
Colorful Butterflies are fluttering inside different pages of the journal. I have attached part of them on the page so that they look like they are moving around and ready to fly. I have also used a similar technique with the crow that is raised as if it is about to fly. A bat from the Naturalist Halloween bundle is attached by two brads on the page, with a little skull and bones hanging beside it.
The majestic clock has printed beautifully on the A4 page. I have aged it all around to give a timely impression. Clocks are a great addition to a Curiosities journal.
