DIY Cotton Batting Ornaments
Today I’m sharing this very special post! This Tutorial was submitted by reader Manuela, from Vintage Savonette Blog, several years ago and I am reviving it since it has been hidden back in the archives for far too long. I have to say that I am absolutely over the Moon about this project! I’ve long been a fan of these charming Old World Cotton Batting Ornaments, but didn’t have a clue how to make them. I’m so grateful to Manuela for sharing her technique with all of us! This is a fun and easy, and very inexpensive project that you can really customize to make your own. Not to mention I think it’s absolutely adorable. I love the primitive rustic feel of this project. The full tutorial with all of the steps is below.
Here’s what Manuela had to say about this project: These are “Christmas angels made from a wire base and cotton batting. The faces are among other sources from The Graphics Fairy. It is an easy project, materials are easy to find and do not cost much at all. It is great fun to make!!”
Supplies for Project Cotton Batting Crafts:
1) Cotton Batting
2) Wire
3) Cardboard
4) Vintage Photos from The Graphics Fairy
5) Bits of Fabric
Steps for making the Cotton Batting Ornaments:
Step 1) Bend and twist the wire in order to make a wire base. Your just making the arms, legs and torso with the wire at this point. See the next step for the head.
Step 2) Cut out a cardboard simple Silhouette of a Torso and Head and use it to back the torso for sturdiness.
Step 3) Next, wrap the strips of cotton batting around the cardboard and the wire. Optional, you could secure the wire to the cardboard with some glue or tape to secure it, in order to make it easier to wrap the cotton batting around it, but you may not find it necessary to do so.
Step 4) Continue wrapping the Cotton Batting around the entire figure.
Step 5) Once everything is all wrapped, cut out a face from a Vintage Image and Glue into place. Then use the scraps of fabric to create clothing. And add accessories if desired, like the Pearl buttons, bits of lace and tiny Christmas tree in the photo above. A matchbox covered with a book page, and glittered up with snow, makes for a nice little bench. And a fabric Mushroom creates a nice umbrella for your little figure.
