The size of this vintage-style junk journal is approximately 11”(inches) x 5”(inches). The spine depth is 2”(inches) with 120 page sides divided into 3 signatures. I was inspired to create the Decoeator’s Day Book when I typed the word “wallpaper” into the search bar on the Premium Membership site and 4 pages of gorgeous thumbnail imagery popped up. I also found the image of the Day Book cover and envisioned perusing through an abandoned attic and coming across a faded dusty old ledger type book kept for decorating ideas for use long ago in the far distant past. I just knew that this cover would be perfect to house those lovely wallpaper images. I also found some antique photos of old homes in my collection as well as invoices for furniture, house painting, drapery, carpeting purchases and the like. The materials I used in constructing this piece are antique, vintage, and contemporary papers and fabrics as well as vintage measuring tapes, laces and trims. The finished journal weighs just under 2 pounds.
I constructed the cover out of several layers of cardstock to which I applied the Day Book image from the Vintage Office Supplies bundle along with vintage fabric and lace
tatting. To give the printed image a flat faded appearance, I used an application of clear gesso and on the reddish edges I used Liquitex Matte Medium to give them a tiny bit of sheen as if they were old real leather corner protectors. For decoration, I used a piece of a vintage measuring tape and applied to the front for a bit of interest.
On the inside of the front cover, I printed a pink and yellow marbled endpaper in two different sizes to construct the endpaper and torn pocket which I stitched together. I sandwiched vintage twill tape to use as a tie closure underneath and secured with glue. This pocket piece was then joined to the printed blue spine fabric and I added a length of tiny vintage ribbon trim to finish it off. On the right hand page, I used a variety of vintage and contemporary fabrics collaged together added a piece of old measuring tape and antique lace and stitched together.
On the left side, the page is made out of an 1877 ledger paper to which I clipped an invoice I copied from my personal collection along with a vintage photograph of a house. Peeking out from behind this page (far left) is a print of a French hardware reciept. On the right side I printed a curtain receipt on vellum and the following page made into a torn edge pocket out of the blue flower image.
I added a piece of vintage lace as a belly-band to the red flocked wallpaper page and slipped in some decorating invoices and a journal card made of a piece of authentic vintage wallpaper. On the right side this page is made from the brown floral leaf wallpaper.
This page is created out of a print of stained parchment and along the edge I applied rose wallpaper in a simple punched design. On the right, I printed pink rose wallpaper on cardstock as well as cloth and created a sample style journal card and clipped to the page.
Left side, I made a tall sample style journal card out of one of the foxed papges in the Vintage paperie bundle and added a blue endpaper and floral wallpaper printed on cloth secured with a strip of a blue and gold wallpaper to hang over the page. On the right side I used a greeen and pink rose wallpaper trimmed with antique lace for the page.
I combined an aqua and rose wallpaper from the Tattered Treasures bundle wih a hotel invoice print and added a page with a picture of a bathroom harvested from a sticker book.
On this fabric covered page (left side), I made a cloth covered pocket to hold a small antique Sherwin-Williams paint brocure which I repurposed to hold two paint sample journal cards and two invoices. On the right side, this page is created from a brown wallpaper to which I clipped a sample-style journal card made of cardstock and cloth both printed with a rose wallpaper.I used a curtain receipt combined with a page showing a room setting harvested from a sticker book in which I backed and stitched to use as the center page spread.
Left side, top of page shows the back flap of a blue and yellow pattern from the Guilded Age bundle hung over the page with a whale tale punched out of an abstract endpaper print. The torn pocket is constructed out of a blue flower print. For decoration, I attached a label from the Little Women bundle embossed with a glazing powder. The pocket holds a watercolour ceiling detail and a print of a London Postcard to which I applied an antique stamp. The right hand side of this spread is a flip out page collaged with antique and contemporary fabrics and vintage lace.
