Edgar Allan Poe Junk Journal
Hey guys, once again one of our fabulous Junk Journal Design Team Members, Lynne Morgado, has created a fabulous junk journal for us. She shares her incredible Edgar Allan Poe Junk Journal with you! Each week we spotlight another Mixed Media project, created by one of the amazing Designers on our team. The designers are tasked to use images from our Premium Membership Site to provide inspiration for your own projects. Be sure to check out her Show and Tell Video below. Please scroll down to the end of this post to see her video. Be prepared to be inspired! I will now allow Lynne to tell you all about her art in her own words…
Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing well. I am back again to tell you about my September Junk Journal Design Team Project. I was really excited and inspired when I saw the Poe’s Halloween Bundle release on the Premium Membership site a couple of weeks ago. If I am honest – for me it is always time for Poe, not just for Halloween.
I’d say it was over a year ago when I took apart a little vintage hardcover book of Edgar Allan Poe poems and stories and tea dyed all the pages. Since then the book cover and the pages sat in my unfinished projects box. Until now!
The cover was fairly plain in a beige tweed book cloth and the logo of the publishing company was on the front cover and I wanted to disguise that. Not wanting to be predictable and put an image of Poe on the cover I went back to one of my favorite bundles: the Marbled Endpapers. From that bundle I chose the gorgeous red marbled paper because it is one I love to use and because the red marbled paper is vivid and dramatic. I cut the corners of the marble printable to mimic the leather or fabric covered corners on the marbled books of old.
Using the image of the skull resting on a book for the cover makes me think this journal could have been found in Poe’s very own library. There is a secret hidden on the cover as well. All will be revealed in the flip through video. I know you wait with bated breath to see – whatever could it be?! My lips are sealed…for now.
I have used several pages from my Poe book in the journal. When I tea dyed them the red edging of the pages ran a little bit and I love how that looks. When possible I chose images to print that went along with the Poe book pages I had chosen to include.
To that end of course you will find ravens perched throughout this journal. I discovered the ravens in the Poe’s Halloween Bundle (of course) and also in the Vintage Halloween Bundle and the Naturalist Halloween Bundle.
Gold accents added to a couple of beetle images were my vision for The Gold Bug. The beetles I chose were found in the Entomologist’s Field Guide Bundle and the Wings & Things Bundle. The pages I included from The Gold Bug story have the cypher that was part of the mystery. I am fascinated by codes and code breaking and immediately though of how one might create a code to keep their secrets safe in their own journal.
The Tell-Tale Heart book page was a perfect partner for the unique heart & flowers journal page also found in the Poe’s Halloween Bundle. The beautiful, grungy and dark journal pages that The Graphics Fairy created for the Poe’s Halloween Bundle are amazing. I printed several of them onto parchment paper and deckled the edges.
There are pockets and tuck spots throughout the journal as well. One larger pocket I created using a bookseller advertisement from the Bibliophile Ephemera bundle.
I created what I am calling a diamond quad tuck spot using one of the printables form the Vintage Pattern Bundle. A deep dark blue pattern paper that caught my eye. I cut it into a square, turned it on it’s end and glued straight down the middle and straight across the middle to create four little tuck spots.
I used a house image from The Graphics Fairy Blog to go with a page from The Fall of the House of Usher. I printed the image onto vellum so you can see the words on the page behind it.
The printable paper I chose for my endpapers is from the Wallpaper Samples Bundle. A grey and black wallpaper that is so unusual, organic-looking and a bit creepy that I knew it was exactly what I needed for this journal.
