Hello everyone! Today I am here with my Fourth project for the Junk Journal Design Team! This is my “Fairy’s Field Notes” journal. I was heavily inspired by the Fairyland Landscapes and Forest Folk Bundles from the Premium website. The cover is made from recycled cardboard that I textured with white and gold acrylic paint and added some burlap lace to the top and bottom edges. The centerpiece of the cover is an image from the Forest Folk Bundle that I sewed onto black cardstock. I layered skeleton leaves and gilded them with gold Luster wax to bring out the texture. I also layered some of my dried Ivy leaves to help frame out the picture. This is an accordion journal, so the closure is a simple sari silk ribbon. It measures 5 ½”x5 ½” with a 1 ¼” spine. There are 10 pages per side, making 20 in total, and several flip-out pockets and hidden journal spots.
To create the accordion I used black card-stock and attached the separate pieces with fabric glue and various strips of fabric. I also used some fun fabric tape from Tim Holtz to attach the cover and the various flip-outs in the journal. I reinforced the attachments by running them through my sewing machine for extra stability and texture. I imagined this journal to be used by the fairy on the front cover, as a way to document the various scenes, plants and people she came across in her journey.
On the inside front cover I collaged some gel prints, some of my eco-dyed paper and leftover bits of wallpaper from the Enchanted Forest Bundle. I attached a small tuck spot and inserted a paper pad I made using some leftover card-stock. The papers include gel prints, tea-stained rice paper, eco-dyed paper and scrap bits from several wallpaper prints from the Premium site. I perforated the pages before attaching them, for easy tearing and closed the pad off with some burlap thread and a small stick I found. On the right is one of the prints from the Fairyland Landscapes bundle that I splattered with gold paint for a whimsical effect.
The left of this page has one of the several journal spots/pockets in the journal. I used gold paperclips to hold one of my gel prints closed as a pocket but by removing those you can fold down the pocket for extra journal space. Inside the pocket I have added another gel print, some stained fabric with a leaf pattern and one of the images from the Forest Folk Bundle. I backed that with collaged card-stock and sewed with my machine. The right is a collage of antique French book page and tissue paper that I gel printed with a fern leaf. I added one of the small domino pendant collage pieces from the Fairyland Landscapes Printables and a small die cut number.
The right of this spread is a simple collage of a wallpaper background from the Forest Folk Bundle and some of my eco-dyed paper. The left is a flip-up pocket I made from an old CD sleeve. I fussy cut one of the images from the same bundle and paired it with some more Antique French paper, a skelton leave and some dried leaves from my stash. I added a number strip from Tim Holtz and splattered more gold paint. I absolutely adore this little Owl and his crown. Inside the pocket is a collaged journal card.
Here on the right is another flip-out pocket filled with more goodies, including another card made from one of the Forest Folk images. I combined some wood-grain paper from the Woodland Wonders Bundle and continuing from the left page to the right page is another image from the Fairyland Landscapes that I combined with some tea-stained rice paper, and a dried fern leaf from my stash. I added more gold splatters and more die-cut numbers for some interest.
On this spread you can see another flip-out pocket where I used more of the wood-grain paper and added a cute little ticket Printable from the Gnomes and Wee Folk Bundle. Inside is a collaged journal card using one of the images from the Forest Folk Bundle. I backed this page with another image from the Fairyland Landscapes Bundle and did a simple journal page on the right with another gel print and some more eco and rust dyed paper.
With these images you can see the effect of the flip-out pockets and tuck spots. When cosed the pocket adds some fun texture and color to the spread. It houses several pieces of ephemera, including several images from the Premium website, more gel prints and more stained fabric. When opened you can see inside the flip out where I have hidden a small collage of a mushroom from the Gnomes and Wee Folk Bundle and a butterfly to decorate the extra writing space.
We’ll finish off with a simple collage spread with another flip-out tuck. I love how simple these pages are while still being functional. And if you look close you can see where I have added an actual fourleaf clover for luck!
Thank you all so much for joining me on this walk-through today, I hope you enjoyed it! I loved having the opportunity to work with all these amazing images and pairing them with some of my own papers and dried leaves. The colors and textures have me ready for spring and some walks in the woods. Wishing you all the best and I’ll see you next time!
