DIY Vintage Angel Tree Topper

Hey guys, this is an old post that I’m dusting off and reposting again as I still think it’s pretty cute and hopefully it still provides a bit of inspiration! I made this DIY Vintage Angel Tree Topper back in the very early days of my blog. This is a quick and easy project using a plain Dollar Store Tree Topper. We will upcycle this Star to make it look like a gorgeous Vintage Treasure to use in your holiday decor! Let’s get started on this fun Dollar Store Craft.

 Supplies for DIY Vintage Angel Tree Topper:

Here’s what I started with. I don’t have one of those Dollar Stores that sells everything for a dollar in my town, my dollar store has a range of prices, so I had to splurge and spend $3. Haha! Anyway, they had these cardboard silver stars with silver glitter, but the glitter was a bit cheap looking so it needed a makeover to give it a bit more sophistication. Glass glitter always adds a richer, more old world appearance to ornaments, so I knew that’s just what this little tree topper needed!

Supply List

Dollar Store Star Tree Topper (I’ve linked a similar one on Amazon, it’s Gold though so you may want to paint it silver first)
White Cardstock
School Glue Gel
German Glass Glitter (or quality glitter of your choice)
Silver Tinsel Trim
Hot Glue Gun

Full Tutorial:

Step 1: I began this diy tree topper project by applying a coat of School Glue Gel. This is the best stuff that I have found to use with Glass Glitter, it really grabs hold of the glitter and there is much less shedding then with some of the other glues that I’ve tried. Safety Note: German Glass Glitter is made of crushed Glass. Keep out of reach of children. And it’s best to protect your eyes with safety glasses and wear gloves while applying the glitter.

Step 2: After applying the glue, sprinkle on the glitter and let dry. I usually do one side at a time and let it dry fully in between.

Step 3: Next print out the graphic, onto plain white card stock, and cut it out, trimming around the edges as closely as possible. You could use a piece of paper too, but the cardstock gives it more weight, makes it more durable and makes it look more like a real authentic Antique ornament.

Step 4: I wanted to add a little extra dimension and texture, so I hot glued on some tinsel garland to the back of the Cut out Angel body and Moon. (I don’t have a source for this, since I actually pulled it out of the trash heap at Lucketts Store one year! Hopefully your craft store will have something similar. Metallic Silver Pipe cleaners might be another option.)

Step 5: Just follow along the edges of the Angel cut out, hot gluing as you go, and then trim off any excess on the ends.

Step 6: Next apply some hot glue to the center of the card stock and stick it onto the front of your Star.

Here she is on the top of the tree. I love how Vintage this looks, like an heirloom that’s been passed down through the years. The glass glitter will tarnish over the next few months, and when I pull her back out next Christmas for the holiday season and it will have such a fabulous aged patina!
