DIY Wool Felt Balls
Hi guys, today we have a basic, but very useful Craft Technique written by guest crafter Chris Roy! Chris is going to show us how to make… DIY Wool Felt Balls. These little felted cuties are perfect for all kinds of projects, and this is a great technique to add to your arsenal of tips!
You can string these together to make pretty Garlands, add some white glitter to make cute mini Snowballs, or use them as a basis for some fun Seasonal figures… I’ve even seen them used as trim on fabric projects. And stay tuned because Chris has an awesome Halloween project HERE, using these balls as a basis for that project. So be sure and watch for that, it’s super cool!
DIY Wool Felt Balls Supplies:
- Wool Roving
- Hot Soapy Water
- Bowl
Step 1:
Divide the wool roving into the size that you desire. The finished ball will be about ½ size once it’s felted. {Example: A .5 ounce package of Wool Roving will make 8 balls that are approximately 1 inch in diameter} Chris used white roving for this tutorial, but it comes in all sorts of colors so you can make whatever color you like that works for your project.
Step 2:
Fill a bowl with hot, soapy water and then place it in the sink.
Step 3:
Grab a clump of wool and dip it into the hot soapy water.
Gently roll the wool clump around in your palms. You do not want to apply pressure at this time… just roll it around.
Step 4:
Once you feel like the ball is starting to come together, you can increase the pressure a little bit until the clump forms a ball that is squishy, but definitely ball shaped.
Step 5:
Dip the now formed ball back into the soapy water, then roll it again in your palms until it is about 1 inch in diameter and feels firm to the touch.
Step 6:
Rinse the ball in clear cool water.
Step 7:
Let the wool felt balls dry thoroughly before using them in your project.
I hope you enjoyed this fun easy DIY Wool Felt Balls technique! I’ve always wanted to try my hand at some wool felting crafts and I think this is a great starter project, that could be used in so many ways. Have you done any felting projects? What kinds of things have you made?

If I want to dye the wool, could I put dye in the soapy water or would I just have to find colors wool?

You can make larger balls and use them as dryer balls in your clothes dryer instead of using dryer sheets laced with chemicals.
