Scottish Wanderings Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Jack Ravi, one of our amazing NEW Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Scottish Wanderings Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Jack introduce himself, and tell you all about his incredible project…
Hello, my name is Jack Ravi and I am a collage and mixed media artist. I like to work with old papers and found objects. This journal is called Scottish Wanderings and it is a celebration of the wild and beautiful land where I live and work. The richness of these pages comes from the variety of elements used, from old ephemera, to photos of kilted boys and girls, nature finds and crispy, fragile paper scraps all combined into a chunky book.
The cover is wrapped in tartan fabric, faux leather, a scrap of stained cotton and a CDV of a woman wearing a pleated skirt. It ties with a string of twine and fabric leaves.
The book is made of 3 signatures hand stitched with waxed thread and glued to a tartan ribbon attached to the cover. I mainly used 3 bundles from the Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site: Woodland Wonders, Scottish Highlands and Instant Ancestors 1. The pages are stained and combined in a unique way and they came together very organically. Scottish Wanderings contains feathers, flowers and petals, image transfers, many marks and pockets to house photographs and tiny journals.
It’s a sculptural object, brittle and fragile, but also wildly powerful in its strong imagery, just like Scotland. The book is also scented with essential oils, so it increases the experience of a woodland travel with moss and flowers. The ancestors portraits have been stained with tea and rust, like most of the other papers, and then collaged with authentic ephemera in dreamy compositions.
The book is filled with images of thistles which is the flower symbol of Scotland. I also included real natural elements found during my walks in the Scottish countryside. Feathers, flowers and petals are often combined with stock labels, offering the idea of a wanderer’s journal.
The book contains some original vintage and antique photographs, that I’ve tucked into little pockets or I cut tartan triangles to slide the photo inside. Two of the pockets were made with crumpled waxed paper and a stamp.
I also added a tiny journal within the journal. The pages are made of tea bags dipped in black paint, and there’s a vintage photograph on the cover.
Also, using the same tartan fabric of the cover, I created a tiny accordion book with square images from the ancestors bundle.
There is also a little bookmark made using scraps of the same paper used in the journal, lightly waxed.

This project has made my heart sing! Every image was extremely pleasing to me.
I have made my own junk journal following Nik the Booksmith’s videos, and have used many Graphics Fairy images, so I understand the process you’ve gone through for this journal – and I love your style! It’s subtle colors are very soothing, but the details makes the whole thing exciting. Thanks for such wonderful inspiration!
