Hi, everyone! I’m Rhonda from JOYjunktique, and I’m so happy to show you my latest Design Team project for the Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. I created a “Seaside Christmas” journal that was inspired by memories of my dad. He loved Christmas and he loved the ocean. He grew up on the beach in Florida and loved to go out into the water on his sailboat as a kid. So, when I found the Cape Cod Christmas kit, I thought of him and got to work creating this journal I’ve called, “Seaside Christmas.” It would make a treasured memory book, or serve as a planner to get ready for the holidays.
I started with two coffee-dyed window envelopes that measured 9×6 inches and joined them together at the flaps to make the base of the book cover. I removed the original cellophane window, so I could replace it with a sturdier transparency film. I printed out the images I chose for the front and back covers on cardstock, and added glitter “snow” to the images. I then covered them with the transparency film that I cut to fit and glued together, while sprinkling more glitter inside to form shaker cards. Then, I glued the shaker cards inside the openings of the envelope windows. I cut some blue lace trim from one of the end papers printables I found on the website, and created a frame around the shaker card on the front cover. I embellished with sequin snowflakes backed with snowy tulle and cheesecloth.
I added muslin to the spine and the back cover, leaving an opening for the shaker card to show through. A cute white picket fence finishes off the back cover. I added coffee filter ruffles to the bottom edges of the front and back covers and sprinkled them with blue glass glitter. Down the spine of the journal, I added a piece of trim to add some interest. A piece of rope ties around the journal to keep it closed. I embellished an ornament, from the German Christmas Market kit, and hung it from the rope.
Inside the cover, I created a muslin fabric liner with a pocket on each end of the book. Shell buttons and twine close the flaps of the pockets. Inside the pockets, you’ll find a scrappy notepad in a snowy bird envelope and some other ephemera goodies that all can be used in or with the journal. You can also see a hint of the blue velvet ribbon that lines the inside of the book spine.
As you turn the page, you’ll see this beautiful lighthouse wallpaper page that I found in my stash and stitched around the edges. The postcard of a ship, from the Sea Captain’s Voyage, serves as a pocket for this cute mini notebook. I added a strip of washi tape to the front cover.
This page features a beautiful image from the Ocean Blues Ephemera kit, and a wintery tag from the Abstract Winter Acrylics kit. I created a pocket by gluing the image to the next page, and then added the winter bird tag that I accented with homemade snow paste and a die-cut snowflake. I added snow paste and snowflakes to most of the ephemera in this journal.
I used this lovely piece of lace to create a tuck at the bottom of this page to hold these soft muted-toned tags I found in the Sea Spray kit. I embellished the tags with some snowy tulle.
I printed a map image, from the Pirate’s Cove kit, on vellum and added this slanted pocket as a fold down. Inside the pocket, I added a tag that I embellished with coffee-filter ruffle and more blue glass glitter.
On these pages, I used a piece of my own coffee-dyed lace paper and a sheet of graph paper. I wanted to add some color, so I gathered this plaid ribbon and layered it with a strip of snowy tulle. I glued on a sleigh button and tucked in a colorful snowy tag of a dog from the Dashing Through the Snow kit.
This page is made from another piece of wallpaper I had in my stash. I just folded it to tuck behind this remnant of a book spine that I glued down. I added a piece of rope swirled on the page and an anchor sticker. Inside the folded wallpaper, I tucked 3 postcards, from the German Christmas Market kit, that I accented with snow as well.
I love this toile patterned page from the Delft Blue Ephemera kit. It is the perfect shade of blue and has a beautiful sailboat image that coordinates with the theme of this journal. The script page, found in the end papers section, created another pocket when glued to the next page, and holds a shell notepad I made with an image from the La Mer kit. A sand dollar charm dangles from the top.
For this mini journal insert, I used the flap of an envelope to attach two book covers, from the Ocean Blues Ephemera kit. I then punched holes and added pages tied in with twine. I hung a compass charm from the twine.
This page features a beautiful sand dollar image, from the Sea Spray kit. To it, I added a little crocheted pocket with two adorable tags, accented with snow paste.
Here is a beautiful distressed page and the other side of that envelope. I opened the envelope flaps and added eyelets with a fabric scrap bow to tie it closed. A mini envelope with a tiny card is tucked under the flaps. I love this sweet little boy, from the Sea Captain’s Voyage kit. The underneath flap also pulls out and holds a scrappy notepad, because you can never have enough notepads when preparing for Christmas!
In addition to the journal, I decorated more of the ornaments that could be used in the journal, added to Christmas gifts, or used to decorate a Christmas tree. The snowy coin envelope, from the German Christmas Market kit, holds some cute tags that are accented with snow.
Thank you for taking the time to see my project. I hope you were inspired. Be sure to watch the video presentation to see the complete flip through of all the details. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and make lots of beautiful memories. I’ll see you next time!
