Shabby Mermaid Junk Journal
Hey everyone. Robin Dudley Howes, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Shabby Mermaid Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Robin introduce herself, and tell you all about her lovely project…
While scrolling through The Graphics Fairy premium membership site for ideas, I would see the beautiful bundles with vintage style mermaid and ocean themes and I knew that a mermaid junk journal was on my list of to do’s. The image I used for the front cover (Oceans Blue Ephemera) set the tone and color theme for this journal and I really love how it all came together. The “shell” of this junk journal is a very old book. I wanted the junk journal to look like it was an ancient and beloved heirloom and since I have several old books I thought it would make a perfect foundation. I made a YouTube tutorial on how I restored and re-constructed the book cover.
I glued an altered file folder that I coffee dyed to the front of the book with the image and added lots of coffee dyed laces, cheese cloth and doily pieces. Of course I had to add glitter because I love sparkly things and some beautiful iridescent shells.
The colors I was drawn to use in the design of this junk journal were influenced by The Graphics Fairy bundles. Teal, peacock blue, mint and dusty sea green/blue all with a vintage overtone.
The book pages I used from the Distressed Texture Photo bundle look like real chipped paint!
Just for fun I decided to make a loaded envelope using the mermaid theme. If you don’t know what a loaded envelope is, you can check out my youtube tutorial on how I made this or search on youtube “loaded envelopes”. I LOVE them! They look more complicated than they actually are and are so much fun to use in journals or as a stand alone gift. What makes them so fun is all the stuff you add to the little pockets on the front, like tags and paper ephemera.
Another thing I made and included in this junk journal is a really cute and QUICK pocket. These are so easy to make and you can decorate them any way you want. Glue them onto a signature and you have an instant pocket!
I hope you enjoyed this and that it has inspired you to make your own mermaid themed junk journal. For weekly Bohemian junk journal ideas and tutorials, subscribe to my YouTube channel below.
