I had a request recently for this exact image! It’s not very often that I can come up with a specific image that someone has in mind, but I just happened to have this one, and actually I had him in two different books! This one comes from an 1870’s Printers Book. The Graphic is an old Advertisement for Cigars and shows and Odd looking Man holding up a Cigar Sign. His mouth is wide open and he appears to be hocking the Cigars, to anyone that will listen. I’ve removed the text, so that you can use it as a Label or Tag if you want to.

I love this graphic. It is used on a hangout bar/restaurant called “Hungry Charlies” in Syracuse, New York. I never knew where it came from originally, but we have a giant Plastic Cup from there that is at least 25 years old now. My husband is from Syracuse, and this place and graphic holds lots of college memories for him. Using it for a Christmas gift. Thanks!

Thanks so much for posting this! I used this beautiful image for the poster of my workshop about pinhole photography. The writing in the cartel means “get a photo by a hole!” ๐

can you tell me where you located this graphic? Or who the illustrator is?
Thanks, I see one of the comments left on this page says that this illustration was on a sign for Hungry Charley’s in Syracuse. It’s close but not exactly the same, I’m actually trying to find the graphic used by that bar/restaurant.
Thnaks for your help

Hi Mark, he’s from an 1870’s printer’s book. There are no artist names in the book, as these were antique “clip art” books used for newspaper advertisements etc. If you had a biz back in the late 1800’s, you would pick and illustration out of one of these books and have the ad company customize it for your business and then it would get placed in a newspaper, or made into a sign etc. They were used by many different companies. I hope that helps!

Hi Karen-
Do you have other images from that printers book? I’d love to locate a copy of that book as well. Sounds like a great resource! Can you email me the title/etc? I appreciate the help! I’m looking for other clip images from that time period.

Hey John,
There is no title on that book. It was a small old bound catalog, that was used for Printers in the 1870’s. The covers are blank and there is no title page. Thanks!

ok–thank you for the reply! post some more images from it! I’m curious what else is in there. Super cool find!
