Hey, everyone! Kate Stevens of Pixie K Designs, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a pretty Wild Ocean Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Kate introduce herself, and tell you all about her incredible project…
I am very fortunate to live by the ocean where I experience the beauty and power of it daily. The beach we live on is rocky, wild, moody, and sometimes dangerous. I love the fact that it is different nearly every day and the way it is often the last thing I hear as I go to sleep at night and the first when I awake. This journal is inspired by the ocean and beach where I live and the constantly changing hues of green, grey and blue.
I created the cover of the book from board and covered it with hand painted cloth. I really struggled to mix the paints I had to achieve the colour I wanted as I am not experienced with colour mixing but after many attempts I settled on this green.
The frame on the front is painted card with crackle paste and decorated with mixed media stones, die cuts, string net and shells. The image in the frame is one of my all-time favourites from the Ocean Blues Ephemera bundle and I knew it would be used on or in one of my journals eventually.
In this journal you can see I have used this beautiful image on the front and inside the front cover on a tag.
This journal has 5 signatures and as is my usual style I have left plenty of room for writing or sketching and adding personal touches. It is not overly stuffed so has room to grow if memorabilia or ephemera was to be added to it.
I have recently purchased a new printer and so I can now print borderless which let me tell you is life changing. You will see that I have experimented with printing an image from one of the bundles and then printing on the back with an image from the Vintage Paperie bundle. This solves the problem of having a vintage image on one side and white on the reverse side and provides a neutral back ground for journaling or decorating in other ways. I love how the Vintage Paperie images blend in so well with my genuine vintage pages.
The images I have used are printed on a variety of papers. Tea dyed copy paper, blue copy paper that I tea stained, vintage music paper, and plain copy paper where I printed the image on one side and then Vintage Paperie on the reverse side.
I used a mix of card stock and matte presentation paper for the ephemera through out the journal.
I have used some images of old invoices as well. One from the French Attic Ephemera bundle and the other is from the French Paperie Collection. I love these images and I use them in nearly all my journals. I enjoy the challenge of trying to make them look as authentic as I can.
I have also used a mix of vintage and antique papers from my collection all based around a grey/green to blue colour scheme to represent the sea and its ever changing hues. I have included some New Zealand vintage ephemera as well both original and copied.
I made a little mini note book in photoshop elements scaling down the book cover image from the Ocean Blues bundle and placing the image of the woman from the same bundle on top. I reversed the image to use for the back of the notebook and printed them out. I used scraps of the papers I had used in the journal to make the pages for the little notebook.
The mermaid image page is a printable from the La Mer bundle with a background from the Vintage Paperie bundle on the reverse side.
I have again enjoyed working with the huge variety of images provided by The Graphics Fairy Premium Site. For a variety of reasons this journal was a work of heart and I am so happy with how it has turned out. I really hope you like it too.
