Black and Cream Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Sharon Hoerth of The Journalocity Shop, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Black and Cream Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Sharon introduce herself, and tell you all about her incredible project…
I am always drawn to journals with neutral papers and colors throughout. The Black and Cream Ephemera Bundle on the Premium Membership Site really inspired me to make such a journal. I had a good start with my black and cream cover.
However, soon into the creation of this project, my old self compelled me to add pops of color here and there. The spine of this old book cover was tattered and torn beyond use as a spine. Repurposing it into a bookmark gave it new life. Here I embellished the front with leftover tapestry fabric that I used for the new spine and inside book covers. I covered the back side with a digital image, and added an eyelet and twine at the top.
I like to incorporate a bit of nature in every journal I make. In this journal I added lavender from my flower garden and adhered it to the page with a waxed seal. It is surprising how well pressed flowers hold up in a journal. They easily store in an old book until you need to use them and will last for years.
A little dimension can add a big pop to small journaling cards. For these two cards, I incorporated 3D butterfly wings, stamped cheese cloth, and vintage linen tags for the tabs.
Layering a sheer fabric flip over lined paper provides so much interest to a journaling spot and also offers a little bit of mystery to what lies beneath.
Vintage wallpaper as pockets, tucks or pages, adds an extra element of texture to a page spread. Thrift stores are great places to find remnants for little cost. I used a wallpaper border as a pocket for one of my journaling cards by stitching it to the page with my sewing machine.
I am always trying to find unique ways to utilize the many interesting images at The Graphics Fairy. In this journal I enlarged a beautiful moth to use as a tuck spot. The size allows you to appreciate all the wonderful colors in the image and the shape is much more interesting than a square or rectangle.
One problem I run into with repurposing old books into journals is making my pages fit the cover. Images and other papers are rarely the right size or scale. To overcome this, I often layer digital images on top of each other before printing to achieve the page size I desire. As an example, in this journal I layered one of the beautiful ladies from the Royal Life Bundle over the top of a
wallpaper image. This effect gives a nice border at the top and bottom of the page.
I love using images that draw you in and make you want to step into the page. The Elegant Room Scene from the British Manor Style bundle does just that for me. Adding other visually related elements along side it such as a window and key, make the whole scene more cohesive.
One of my favorite ways to add interest and fun to a page is to use a fancy sewing machine stitch. I often run these along the edges of tuck spots and pockets as extra eye candy and textural places to run your fingers across.
