Boo! It’s time to start those fun Halloween projects!
This Family Spell Book is another addition to my annual Halloween Family Journal projects. Each fall I create three or four Family Spell Journals. I look upon these fun, silly and “spooky” journals much like you look upon getting out your Christmas tree if you celebrate Christmas. I like to think my customers take these fun and atmospheric journals out each Halloween and enjoy looking through the pages and pockets which are stuffed with Halloween spookiness.
To begin with, this journal is made with papers that are designed from 100% Graphics Fairy premium imagery. Many of the components come from bundles that aren’t necessarily “halloween” themed at all. By changing the color values of different papers and images available, I was able to create a Halloween/Fall themed set of papers as the base of this journal.I returned to my original journal style with this journal. Lots of pockets and tuck spots filled with fun surprises. It is a large journal and the cover is made from a set of old book boards which are covered in the worn brown marble cover in the Fall Colors Ephemera bundle. I love this cover for Halloween Journals because it has the initials S and P on the side, which I like to think stand for Spells and Potions!
I love to make tabs for certain journals and Halloween is maybe the most fun type of journal to use with tabs. I either make my own or cut bits of numbers and words off of tags. I especially love scary words like ARSENIC and POISON! Such fun!
This first page has a tuck spot that is embellished with a twig. The inside cover has a small pocket which contains a file folder made from the Tattered Treasures Parchment. I think I use this image in EVERYTHING!
This double pocket page holds a lot of fun faux ephemera. I made many witchy calling cards for all sorts of witches. There is Sirene Shade, Hildy Hexingbeam the Spell Yodler and Safire Sangria, Enchantress Extraordinaire. I also like to stuff my Halloween journals with “family pictures.” This is SUCH fun! I have used photos from many of the instant ancestors and antique portraits bundles. I photoshop witches hats on their heads and add spiders and they become Grandma and Aunt Hazel. I write silly family references on the backs of the photos.
I made several envelopes from the parchment paper scan and stuffed them into tuck spots. This page uses an owl and the moon to hold the inserts in place. The belly band opposite holds a bookmark envelope and picture of grandpa, the warlock.
All of the tuck spots feature fun, Halloween items that can be used to write fun, family Halloween memories. The mushrooms I have used throughout really set the theme for homemade possets and potions!
Like the witch calling cards, I also designed several “business or trade” cards for my witch family. I like to think of this family collecting cards for all sorts of goods and services.
The pocket on the right is stuffed full of failed experiment receipts. These are fun to make from the pharmacy labels available on the premium website. By adding old paper backgrounds, you can create all sorts of silly EXTINCT, DANGEROUS EXPERIMENT which just lends to the silly, spooky fun.
This final double pocket is filled with recipes cards that can actually be used for your favorite fall pot luck dishes. On the left side is one of my favorite graphics fairy images, the poem “Night” which lends a spooky, Halloween feel to any Halloween journal and is always included in the ones I make. I hope this Halloween journal gets your fall, holiday season juices flowing and that you will try your hand at a fun Family Spell Book!

Absolutely FABULOUS! This has inspired me to get back to a kitchen witch journal/book I was working on and set aside (for too long). Everything in your journal is just perfect. You didn’t talk about the fabric embellishments which really make the journal outstanding. Beautiful work!

This is an exceptional journal! I can tell you love the poem by the way you’ve treated the concepts in this journal. I love the broken glass, the frayed fabric, the flowers – so many symbolic elements and the whole of it is just gorgeous! Love it!

Thank you, Kathleen! I appreciate you taking the time to comment! XO

Such a stunning journal, Dody. I was glad to be introduced to this poem. I loved all the ways you incorporated mica. I think it’s an under-used element in journal making.
Dody Williams says
Thank you, Carla! I think I am obsessed with mica! I appreciate the comment.
