Midsummer Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Henriette van Mierlo, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Midsummer Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Henriette tell you all about her lovely project…
I love to make seasonal junk journals so I decided to make a summer themed journal. I started this project by just writing down words that came to my mind when I think about summer. Words like sun, beach, flowers, butterfly, picnic, vacation and so on. On the Graphics Fairy premium membership site I typed in the words I associated with summer and many useful and very colorful images popped up and I printed lots of them out. All bundles and images I used are listed below.
Then I started on making the cover. This is made from two pieces of yellow fabric with fiberfill in between. On the edges I sewed blue seam binding and on the spine I’ve added a daisy trim. The closure is removable. It’s a white ribbon with little flowers on it and on the front I glued pieces of old lace, doilies, two yellow buttons and a cute butterfly application.
The journal is approximately 9 x 6,5 x 1,5 inches. It has 3 signatures and about 130 page sides. It looks very colorful with all the summer themed images and charms. For my signatures I used all kinds of different papers, old and new. Colorful cardstock but also old ledger, book papers and vintage wallpaper. Some of the pages have colorful lace trims or fabric ruffles on the side. And those ruffles are a great place to attach cute charms. I also attached beads and charms on the threads in the middle of the signatures.
Of course there are a lot of flower images in this journal. The Graphics Fairy membership site has lots of beautiful images you can choose from, like this pretty rose and the roses on the tag.
Searching the premium website, I came across so many useful ones I decided to make a lot of journaling cards and put them in the pockets and tuck spots throughout the journal. I made this photocollage of many of the journaling cards.
I also found a few postcards in the Dutch Tulip festival bundle that suited my theme. I printed them out and glued a strip of fabric on the back so you have another tuck for ephemera.
Some of the images I found I made into a pocket or tuck spot. Like the colorful file folder from the tropical finches bundle and the vibrant bird image you see in the next photos.
I made a bookmark from linen fabric and sewed on three white buttons with a cute flower stitch. The bookmark is decorated with lace. The flower buttons look so adorable.
No summer themed journal should be without butterflies and other insects. I had a large butterfly die cut in my stash and I added it to a signature which gives a great effect. The Graphics Fairy has many useful bundles available and also on the free domain site you can find great butterfly pictures.
The beach is also part of my summer junk journal. I added two 1920’s postcards with people on the beach (it is fun to study the photos and see the beach fashion in those days) and a vintage playing card of a little boy with a beachball.
Special items I added in this journal are for instance this fabric flip. This is an old embroidered piece of linen with a herbal image. I found it at a local thrift store.
I used a flower napkin to decoupage a glassine bag and added a vintage postcard.
This specimen slide is made using paper from the delicate endpapers bundle. Behind the mica window is a dried flower.
I used a wildflower trade card to wrap around pretty flower ribbon.
