8 Natural Fabric Botanical Images – Cotton, Hemp, Flax
This is an interesting collection of Natural Fabric Botanical Plant Images, including Cotton, Hemp and some Flax plants! Included are several beautiful Antique Botanical Prints, mostly in full color, of various types of plants that are used to make Fabric. Have you ever wondered when walking through a fabric store, or shopping for clothing, where those fabrics came from? Or course today, we do have lots of synthetic materials used in fabrics and clothing as well, but once upon a time, these materials were all natural and many were grown from these types of plants. Each plant has a beauty all it’s own. I’ve kept the original creamy paper backgrounds on these as well as the original text, that names the plant species in the illustration. I hope you can find some uses for these in your creative handmade projects. They would be great to print out and frame as a collection, all together, on a wall. Or you could transfer them onto fabric and make some lovely pillows with them.
Hemp Plant Images
This is a lovely old Botanical Illustration of a Hemp Plant done in full color. The little frame around the image is rather primitive, and not quite square, but I think it adds some charm to the picture!
Here we have a very stylized Hemp Plant Engraving. It’s so decorative looking! This one was scanned from an Antique Print in my collection.
Here is another Hemp plant, also known as Canabis Sativa. This useful plant, can be used in so many different applications, but it can be used in Fabric or Clothing as well. The flower looks to be a bit plain, and the leaves have that classic shape that has been used in so many artistic designs over the years.
Flax Plant Images
Next up we have a very pretty Flax Plant Image. This particular species is called Linum Usitatissimum. Don’t ask me to pronounce that! Haha! It looks like that would be quite a mouthful to speak. Anyway, this one has beautiful two toned bright blue Flowers, with Yellow centers. It has delicate looking leaves and there is even a bit of root on this one.
Here is the latest addition to this collection. This is another lovely Flax flower. Such delicate little blooms!
Cotton Plant Images
Shown above is the lovely, and useful, Cotton plant. While I’ve seen cotton plants in photos, with their fluffy white fruit, I’ve never seen the flower before! The flower is quite pretty with it’s bright yellow petals, red stamens and bright green leaves. The scientific name is Gossypium Barbadense.
This is a Botanical Cotton Plant Image with Flowers, Leaves, and some fluffy bits of white Cotton! Make sure you enlarge this see the detail on this nice Botanical! This one was scanned from a Circa 1887 German Plant Book.
This next Botanical is also a Flax Plant, but it looks quite different from the one above. This species is the New Zealand Flax, the scientific name is Phormium Tenax. This illustration has bright yellow Flowers, that almost look like Banana peels! The leaves are also very different, they are long slender green leaves, that all grow straight up from the root.
I hope you enjoyed this wonderful curated collection of Natural Fabric Plant Images! If you like these, you might also like to spend a little time in our Botanical Archives Section HERE to find loads more beautiful plant and flower illustrations.

I grew up in an era when cotton was , like tobacco, one of the most plentiful crops. As a child I attempted to help my Mama pick cotton. It took a lot of picking to get 100 pounds, but she was very good. Still, with all of the many fields of beautiful white cotton I have seen I can’t remember ever seeing the beautiful blossoms that preceded the cotton bolls. Thank you so much for all the beautiful images your make available.

Karen, Me thinks, these are SO delightful! Right now at this moment in time, I’d like to make a set of 3 of the smaller pillows for my sunroom. I have not attempted transfer to fabric, but I know you have instructions on the site to do this. AND, I really have not sewed in a long time either.

Thank you Patricia 🙂 Have fun, I am sure you will do fantastically with your pillows!

The scientific term for Hemp is cut off. With 8.5×11 inch paper. My printer largest size I see , so far is 8.5 by an eighth of an inch over 1/2 inch. Or just a tad over 11.5” ! Thankyou ! 😊

How do I print ?! Thanks!
graphicsfairy says
Hi Anna, you will need to first download the image to your computer. To do that just click on the image and it will enlarge it. Then click on the right side of your mouse and select save image as. Then name it what you like and click save. It is now downloaded to your computer and you can print it as you would anything else. I hope that helps 🙂
