Red Beauty Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Brandi Knebel of Brandi Bel Arts, one of our amazing new Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Red Beauty Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Brandi tell you all about her incredible project…
Hello everyone! Today I am back with my second project for the Design Team! This journal is Titled “Red Beauty”. I really wanted to do a Nature themed journal, however since we are getting into winter, I didn’t want to make it “Spring” themed, so I focused on white, black and red. It measures 6”x4” with a 1” spine. The cover is a soft cover made from canvas, to which I have collaged several different fabrics. The front features an image from the Entomologists Field Guide Bundle, and a Black and Red Butterfly Image I found on the site. I printed it on canvas and added red metallic and white paint to make the image pop a little more. I added a clock and red rose button with a few dangles made from black, pearl and red beads. The closure is Velcro.
I wanted to try something a little different for this journal, so there is only one “signature”, made using a lay-flat journal technique that allows me to use one page as a full spread. Of course, since I have added ephemera, the journal does not actually lay flat! Here you can see a journal page from the Take Flight Bundle, to which I have added black, white and red acrylic paint. I attached one of my flower paintings to the left for some extra interest.
On this spread I used a page from the Antique Paper Scraps Bundle and added some splatters digitally. I stenciled in a little bit of flowers, and then used some burlap ribbon to create a belly band. I collaged several Images from the bundles, as well as some thread and one of my pressed flowers to make a focal point. Inside I housed some cards I made using black cardstock, the Altoid Tin Background Printable from the Take Flight Bundle and Printables from the Romantic Roses Bundles. I covered the background of the roses with black and gold acrylic paint, to make it more cohesive to the color scheme.
Here I have used a ledger page from the Vintage Office Supplies Bundle for the background. On the left I added a tuck spot, that I created out of some Vintage Rotary slides and some of my pressed
flowers. In it I have included a tag from the Poppies and Daisies Bundle, that I stamped and added faux stitching to. I topped it with some red lace and added a double sided card from the Red and White Floriculture Bundle.
This spread I created with another ledger paper, this one from the Blank Paper Ephemera Bundle. On the left a made a collage using a stamp, a dyed skeleton leaf and some washi tape from the Poppies and Daisies Printables. I transferred the image onto packing tape to get the transparent look. To the left I have made a pocket out of a paper scrap gifted to me by one of my scrap swap friends that I thought fit the theme perfectly. Inside I have tucked another hand painted flower card, and some Altoid Tin Printables backed with cardstock, from the Woman in Red Bundle.
For this spread I used an image from the French Newspaper Ephemera Bundle, that I added splatters to digitally. On the left I have created a cluster from some more dyed skeleton leaves and a few fabric flowers. I added a little piece from the Parcel Post Bundle for a little extra red. Inside I have included another Printable from the Red and White Floriculture Bundle, as well as a cluster made from the Parcel Post, Junk Journal and Woman in Red Bundles.
Here I have added another tuck, this one made from the Washitape Printables and a cluster from the Junk Journal and Black and White Flower Shop Bundles. I added a die cut and one of my old tickets, and Embossed the flowers for extra texture. Inside I have placed another specimen slide I made from my dried flowers and another Vintage Rotary slide, as well as another printable from the Woman In Red Bundle. This page is also made from the French Newspaper Ephemera, and I added a little stitching to the right hand side.
For this page I used a Printable from the Red, Green and White Bundle, paired with an Image from the Blank Paper Ephemera. I added them both in Procreate, so that it would print as one page. To tie the pages together I used black and white acrylic paint that I sponged on, and then added some gold splatters. I think it’s very simple but very effective, and great for journaling.
Here I have digitally collaged an Image from the Tattered Paper Treasure Bundle. I superimposed an Image from the Wallpaper Samples bundle on top and then distressed it with paint splatters. I also added a rose image from the Romantic Roses Bundle. I really wanted to red to be prominent in this journal, and this was an easy and effective way to add more color.
For this last spread I used Images from the Entomologists Field Guide, and added Red and Black splatters. I lightened up the bottom right corner with a little white gesso, and then I printed and stained red an image of a beetle from the same bundle. I then transferred it to packing tape, to add a translucent element to the page. Thank you so much for joining me in this little walkthrough! I had a blast creating this journal, and it was so easy to find what I wanted on the website!

Are there any construction steps somewhere about making the fabric cover and the “lay flat” binding? I’m a member of the premium site, and would love to learn how to do this!

Hi Rebecca, No, I’m sorry, I don’t think we have that. You can use the links at the bottom of this posts to contact Brandi directly on her social media channels. I’m sure she would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
