Shabby Whiskers Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Marie Willetts from Crafty Landing, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Shabby Whiskers Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Marie tell you all about her incredible project…
Hi everyone! It’s Marie from Crafty Landing here with you again. I’m back with another DT project for The Graphics Fairy, and for this month, I’ve chosen cats as my theme, hence the name ‘Shabby Whiskers’. For this journal, I have gone shabby-vintage. I’ve chosen soft pink and brown toned papers, and pulled images from the beautiful ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle, along with other Graphic Fairy printables. Every page has a hint of shabby-ness with lace, ribbon, embroidered trims and vintage buttons used throughout. The pretty cat pages from my own stash work purrfectly (see what I did there?) with the digital papers and ephemera I found on the Graphics Fairy website. Being a cat lover, myself, I have had such fun creating this journal. With plenty of journaling space inside, it can be used to record many feline adventures!
As you can see, it’s a hard cover, made from thick cardstock covered in pieces of vintage lace which were sewn on. I chose a sweet kitten image for the front, and embellished it with lace, paper flowers and some vintage buttons. It has a ribbon tie closure. For the inside cover, I used a sturdy piece of scrapbooking cardstock with a woodgrain effect.
This page showcases a full-length side tuck. I made this by collaging a strip of paper from one of the ‘British Flower Guide’ printables with one of the many cat postage stamps from the ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ printables (I have used nearly all of those stamps in this journal). I’ve also added a small cluster of lace and gold trim. Inside the tuck, I’ve placed one of the Artsy Postcards from the same bundle.
Here, I’ve used one of the journal pages from the ‘Printemps’ bundle, as it colour-matches this journal well. I made a double bellyband using vintage lace and trim to hold an envelope I found in the ‘Vintage Album Frames’ bundle. On the front of the envelope, I stuck the delightful ‘CAT’ vocabulary card from the ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle. This whole page is an example of how you can mix-and-match images and printables from different bundles. I love perusing the website – after all, there are 1000’s of images to choose from!
As I’ve already mentioned, there is plenty of journaling space in the journal, and this double spread is an example of that. On the left, I chose one of the plain backgrounds from the ‘Blank Papers And Parchment’ bundle, to allow for some journaling. I’ve added a lace pocket and matching green envelope, which I collaged using one of the cat postage stamps and florals cut from the ‘British Flower Guide’ Collage Sheet. I’ve used one of my own tea-stained papers on the right, again for journaling. Along the edge, I stuck a strip of pretty wallpaper for some interest, and this came from the ‘Beekeeper’s Cottage’ bundle. I then added a swinging tag, which I created by grouping two separate images together. In this case, the cat and teacup. Both found by using the search bar on the
website.
I must have a liking for swinging tags at the moment. On the right, there are two more!
From my stash of papers, I printed this particular page twice, cut out the tag images from the spare sheet, then used split pins to hold them in place over the matching images on the journal page. Also, to create an element of surprise, I chose one of the cats from the postage stamp sheet and stuck it underneath a tag. I love how they look. It’s a great way to hide some journaling, don’t you think? The page on the left has a slim tuck using more of that lovely wallpaper from the ‘Beekeeper’s Cottage’ bundle, and I’ve attached a bulb pin with scraps of fabric and lace. I also found a metal cat charm in my stash, so I had to use that. It’s too cute!
The left page shows a cute cut-out image of a vintage cat from my stash, which I embellished with paper flowers, leaves and vintage buttons. The cat image flips open to reveal some ephemera held in place by a hidden ‘slot’ in the journal page. To do this, I took my craft knife and carefully cut around part of the image on the page to make a slot just big enough to hold the ephemera pieces, another postage stamp and the catnip envelope, both from the ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle.
Finally, I’m sharing a side view of the journal. It looks so tactile with all those laces and trims. Full of shabby loveliness, inviting us to have a tiny peek inside. I know I would, would you?
Thank you for stopping by today, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my ‘Shabby Whiskers’ Journal. Please drop by the Graphics Fairy YouTube channel to watch a full flip-through of the journal.

Hi Tineke, if you go to the “Printables” section of the Premium site, and then in the little box on the left side of the screen select the first option “Artist Trading Cards” (ATC) and that will bring up all of them. There are lots to choose from. I hope that helps!
