Swallow Song Junk Journal
Hey, everyone! Dody Williams of Dorothy Jane Paperie, one of our amazing new Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Swallow Song Junk Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Dody tell you all about her incredible project…
I had so much fun making this journal. I call it my “Swallow Song” because I used birds as my anchor theme. The method used to construct this journal primarily came about as the result of a tutorial I purchased a while back and I played around with it a little bit. While I always love making journals – I had that Christmas-y, can’t wait to get back to it feeling as I was making this one!
The cover of this journal is made from various hinged flip outs. The first cover page opens onto a lace pocket and a lace belly band. The back of the cover page is a collage made from some of my favorite Graphics Fairy egg prints. The belly bad covers a collaged page of old ledger papers.
When you flip to the next “page” you are still in the section that is officially the cover signature. This signature contains a hidden mini journal filled with vintage papers as well as a tuck spot backed by the my favorite pale blue egg prints complimented by a tag made from the exact same paper because I couldn’t bear to cover the eggs!
The third picture simply shows a page in the “mini” journal which feature a small vignette of a bird frame (from the regular GF website) and my favorite fat robin, who is framed behind mica and is attached by a small clip to water color paper.
The fourth picture is a close up of the middle and primary journal signature. I wanted to show how all of the papers stack up to reflect a lovely layered effect. Again, I have dipped into the Graphics Fairy egg prints to create a tag in a library pocket. The pocket was something I created over ten years ago for another bird book, but I still love it and decided to use it here.
This fifth photo shows an interior page I created with water color paper flipped up upon itself to create a pocket. The pocket is stuffed with another favorite GF image – the Barn Swallow poem which when printed out has a lovely purple-ish ink I just love. I juxtaposed this poem with some dried hydrangeas which have that same purple hue glued to a wonderful piece of textured wall paper.
This next picture reveals a tag collaged with papers and dried flowers next to a lace up-tuck which contains a tag with a lovely swallow from the GF’s plentiful collection of swallows. There are plenty of gorgeous swallows to be found. I just love them and I fussy cut the one on the tag. I found an absolutely gorgeous length of creamy, silk satin (real silk) ribbon and tied the most delicious bow. It may be my favorite page!
Continuing with my love of the pale egg prints, I made a flip up which is secured by Tattered Paper Treasures (my all time favorite bundles – 1 and 2!) washi tape. While I only used a small piece in this journal, I absolutely adore the Tattered Paper Treasures Washi tape! The tag which sits opposite is a printable from the Cherry Blossom Lane bundle. These wonderful tags I used throughout this journal.
I fussy cut these three lovely swallows sitting on a wire to extend my side tuck and keep my egg print money envelope in place. This envelope is a perfect place to story long, secret journal cards. My final picture features my best find from my search for bird images on the GF premium website. It is the sweet little card from the Forest Folk bundle and I used it as a tuck spot.
Throughout this journal I used images scattered across so many bundles, I really could say any single one played a main roll. The Graphics Fairy has so many wonderful bird images. I could make ten different bird journals and not used all of the amazing images!

Gorgeous!!!! What do you call those things that look like brads mounting the photo and where do you get them?
Dody says
Thank you so much! The photo is actually glued to cardboard (I think corrugated) and the brads are from Michaels – they are I think recollections?I have had them for awhile, but I do think. you can still get them!
