Woodland Vacation Folio Journal
Hey, everyone! Dody Williams of Dorothy Jane Paperie, one of our amazing new Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Woodland Vacation Folio Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Dody tell you all about her incredible project…
For this journal, I decided to go far afield of my usual ruffle and heavily embellished journal style and try something that is more grounded in nature and practicality. I call this journal the “Woodland Vacation Folio” and I can’t express enough how fun it was to make! The cover is made from a book/album cover from the Wild and Wonderful bundle. I actually cut and pasted parts of the journal into pieces and then reassembled them onto the cover. The base of the folio/journal is constructed from a heavier card stock green hanging folder. These folder makes wonderful tags and covers and when the office I work in moved a few years ago, I snagged a stash! I used a simple clasp (found on Amazon) as a faux closure, but the journal is actually held closed with elastic bands and a long piece of twine.
When you open the journal, it folds out to reveal a left side panel and a wide center section enclosed by two twist-tie panels which reveal an interior pocket when opened.
The left panel has a removable notepad made from vintage papers which is held own place by a bulldog clip. Under this notepad, I constructed a belly band that hold a small pamphlet full of papers printed from The Vintage Paperie bundle. The enclosure panels are made from #21 in the Tattered Paper Treasures bundle.
The picture above shows the folio fully opened to reveal how the folio appears when expanded. You can see the layering effect of the many pockets which make up the entirety of the journal.
Here you see the second layer of pockets which happens to be one of my favorites. This pocket was constructed by folding a vintage page from a book on Botany. There is a small exterior pocket which holds a tag I made with a butterfly attached with a specimen pin. The interior pocket holds a double tag within a tag.
On thid page you see a larger pocket constructed from a digital paper I designed starring my favorite image in this project, the dragon fly from the Twilight on the Lake bundle. I used this fellow over and over in this project. He was my inspiration. This larger pocket holds a vintage glassine envelope which is filled with writing papers made from the ledger paper in the American West Bundle (which I modified a bit here and there.)
This photo shows one of the two full size pockets, this one being made from the lovely egg print from The Ornithologist bundle.
This next layout incorporates The Camp Fire Song sheet music which backs the egg illustration. I HAD to include this music and it looks very fun juxtaposed against a double pocket configuration. The smaller, top pocket is actually a botanical slide with a butterfly from the Butterfly Garden bundle and the gorgeous aged parchment from Tattered Paper Treasures. The butterfly pocket is made with real parchment and the butterfly slides in and out and can be used for notes.
The final pocket shown is made in a accordion design to allow extra room and it contains a small journal I made with the Green Clover Leaves book cover. I created a small booklet with blank water color paper that can be folded to a larger size to accommodate a water color sketch. I really enjoyed making this. I love to make pockets with “real estate” and this project really was all about pockets!

This is an exceptional journal! I can tell you love the poem by the way you’ve treated the concepts in this journal. I love the broken glass, the frayed fabric, the flowers – so many symbolic elements and the whole of it is just gorgeous! Love it!

Thank you, Kathleen! I appreciate you taking the time to comment! XO

Such a stunning journal, Dody. I was glad to be introduced to this poem. I loved all the ways you incorporated mica. I think it’s an under-used element in journal making.

Thank you, Carla! I think I am obsessed with mica! I appreciate the comment.
