DIY Vintage Moon Sign
Today I’m sharing another fabulous DIY project by reader Annie Spackman! Today Annie is showing us how she created this adorable Vintage Moon Sign, using the Mod Podge Transfer Technique!
Here’s what Annie had to say about this project “You probably already know this but just in case you don’t, thrift stores are a great place to find outdated signs for cheap, and the basic structure is already there for you to redo. That’s where I found this sign for less than $5. It used to have a cowboy boot with “Cowboy’s Rule” on it. I wanted to make a sign that could go in kids room so I went with the ever so popular “I love you to the moon and back” theme. I knew just where to go for the moon graphic….Thank you Graphics Fairy!!”
Supplies:
1) Wooden Thrift Store Sign
2) Latex Paint
3) Craft Paint
5) Power Sander
6) Mod Podge
Steps:
Step 1) First I put my base coat on which is off-black. Then I used some red a midnight blue craft paint in random areas. After it was dry I went over it with some off-white paint..I like to use latex for signs because to me they hold up better especially if you put them outdoors.
Step 2) Next I used my power sander to distress it so you can see the colors underneath.
Step 3) I found the image of the moon and printed it out with my inkjet printer. I did a mirror image so that his eyes would be looking at the wording I wanted to use.
Step 4) I used Mod Podge to coat the printed side of the graphic and positioned it where I thought it would look good. Now the hardest part… You have to wait until it dries, preferably overnight!
Step 5) After it was completely dry, I took a damp sponge and wet the paper. I slowly used my fingers to rub the layer of paper off so that the image would be revealed. It took me a few times of wetting the paper and rubbing off. There are some areas where the paper ripped but that just adds to the vintage feel:) I then added my lettering and took a very fine sanding block and went over the whole thing. You can’t even tell there is paper on the wood it’s so smooth!
Thanks so much for submitting another fabulous project Annie!! I hope you guys enjoyed it!
