Summer Garden Folio Journal
Hey, everyone! Beth Wallen of Beth’s Journal Boutique, one of our amazing Junk Journal Design Team Members, created a fabulous Summer Garden Folio Journal for us this week. As you know, we feature one new Junk Journal project each week created by one of our creative team of artists. Our Design Team Members select from the 100’s of Vintage Image Bundles on our Premium Membership Site, for their creations, in order to show you beautiful ways to use those images. We hope you will be totally inspired by this series!
Therefore, please make sure you check out the video tour at the bottom of the page…please scroll all the way down to see it. Are you ready to be inspired? I will step out of the way and let Beth tell you all about her incredible project…
Hi everyone! Beth here from Beth’s Journal Boutique with my June project. Here we are, it’s finally summer! I hope you are enjoying good weather wherever you are in the world! This time of year, I like to do a bit of gardening and spend time outside enjoying the garden in the evenings, watering the flowers and seeing what is new. If you follow my work, you know I love to create folio journals and in honour of summer, I have created one in a summer garden theme. My thought was that this could be used for planning your garden plantings and containers with space for adding notes and progress photos to reference back to year after year. There are so many bundles on the premium site that were perfect for this project and I have listed the ones I used at the end of this post for you.
I created this folio with 3 pieces of 65- pound cardstock. The folio measures 4.5 x 8.25. You can see in the photo that I scored a spine and then on each side added a flip-out with a ¼ inch gusset. I used score tape and Fabri-Tac glue to make sure the flip-outs were securely attached. Once I had the base finished I added my background papers which were backed onto distressed kraft paper, adding a shabby, vintage feel. These layers added to the cardstock make a very sturdy cover for the folio. After I had the base covered, I sewed an envelope into each of the 2 gussets and the signature into the spine
On the cover I chose a pretty rose image from the “Rose is a Rose” bundle. The image is edged in gold rub n’ buff and backed with kraft paper that I have aged around it. As a final touch, I added some aged tape to complete the shabby vintage feel. The cover background paper is my favourite image from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle and is also edged in gold rub n’ buff.
On the inside of the front flip out I used the washi tape image from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle for the background and added a kraft paper pocket with lace along with some aged tape. I’ve added a decorative tab to the journaling card with some “Catherina Kleine Birds” images in a small vintage glassine envelope.
Here I have added a journaling card with a vase of flowers to use as a pocket. This was backed onto kraft paper to add the vintage, shabby look. I sewed an expandable envelope into the gusset; this envelope is from the “Envelope Templates” bundle which I traced onto a printable from the “Parisian Pinks” bundle.
I have clipped a bag to some graph paper to add some extra space for documenting or adding photos. The image on the bag is from a journaling page in the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle which was printed at a reduced size. This adds texture and interest to the journal.
Here I have added a lace pocket to a coffee dyed policy envelope. In the pocket I have an embossed tag and a decorative journaling spot.
I have used printables of varying sizes and colours clipped into the journal to add extra documenting space and interest. These can all be removed and used where they are needed.
I used a printable from the “Delicate End Papers” bundle to create this full journal size expandable pocket. Adding some disks and string as a closure finishes it off. This is a useful place to store larger items, perhaps receipts from your garden purchases!
The inside back cover has the same washi tape printable from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle that I used on the front inside cover. I have added the same corner pocket with a decorative journaling card and larger journaling page.
There are so many pretty touches in this journal and a variety of different ways to add journaling space. I added a fun note pad with papers of varying size that can be used for extra notes or lists along with a long envelope sewed into the back gusset. I had such fun creating this summer garden folio journal and will be making more of this style in the future! Thank you for taking a look and I look forward to coming back soon with my next project. Until then, enjoy the summer!

These Junk journals are very beautiful, but I really miss seeing to see how people use them and what they put in them.
So it could be interesting with some video post or pictures showing how people use them.

Hi Sisse, we have a post here that talks about what to do with a Junk Journal https://thegraphicsfairy.com/what-is-a-junk-journal/ Make sure you watch the video at the bottom of the post to see a flip through of a journal that is actually being used. I hope that helps!

A beautiful journal this is. Can you please tell me in which bundle I can find the ‘old paper printables’? And I would also like to know where I can find these beautiful vintage vases with flowers (want to use these images in a next journal). I searched everywhere, but cannot find them. Beth says that she did a little search on the site for flowers and found them…………….
It would be great to be able to find this bundle and these flowers in vases. Thank you in advance.

Hi Tineke, The vases can actually be found here on the blog, here is the link https://thegraphicsfairy.com/floral-vase-images/ We don’t actually have a bundle called “old paper printables”. I believe she is talking about the 2 Tattered Treasure Bundles that we have on the premium site. If you do a search for “Tattered” using the search box on the Premium site, they should both come up for you. I hope that helps!
