Hi, friends! It’s such a pleasure to be here sharing another Design Team Project for The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership website. As I looked around the website for ideas and inspiration, I happened onto the Secret Garden kit with the beautiful image of this young girl, and I knew she would be the star of my next project! I imagine that her name is “Rose”, and she even inspired me to write a poem that tells about her love for summer and what nature taught her as she grew up. And so, the title of this sweet garden journal is “Summer’s Rose”. It is full of flowers, birds, butterflies, bees, and lots of embellishments that add beauty, along with quotes that add a meaningful purpose.
I added the image of “Rose” to an original old photo album page. I used a bookplate label to feature the title of the journal, and adhered it to the top of the perfectly aged book cover. A
beautiful strip of vintage sheer lace adds a softness to the cover. I created a floral “bouquet” that is attached to the corner of the album page. I attached the album page to the book cover using
delicate rose appliques that serve as hinges for the album page to open and reveal the beauty that’s hidden inside. The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership website has countless photo
album pages and book covers that can be used to create a cover like this.
I pamphlet-stitched the two signatures into a fabric liner and then wrapped the spine of the signatures with a strip of ticking. Using the stitched hem strips of a painter’s drop cloth, I joined
the two book cover pieces together. Then I wrapped a crocheted doily around the center between the drop cloth strips to better secure the signatures to the book covers and to add a soft detail. I love the finished look of the layered spine.
The inside of the book cover is lined with embossed coffee-dyed cardstock, and I just love the dimension that the embossing adds throughout the various pages of the journal. The key adds the perfect “Secret Garden” touch, I think. The wide floral trim gives a fun addition of color to the fabric liner.
This vintage postcard went perfectly with the theme of the journal and gives it a feel of years gone by. It also created a pocket when glued to this side of the fabric liner. The pocket holds a quote card. The inspired poem is on the opposite page and folds out for a secret journaling spot. I added dried rose petals and flowers from my yard to bring a touch of nature into the journal pages.
I found a tutorial (by Diana of Dreams Factory) on the website that shows how to add gold foil to tags, so I got busy accenting many of the tags, and so much more, with the gold foil. It was
really simple and made a big impact on the presentation. The light perfectly catches the gold sparkle on these tags, and the artificial leaves decorate the page while also adding a unique tuck spot.
There are many beautiful tags and quotes sprinkled throughout the pages. They bring lots of life to the journal pages and perfectly display all the lessons that “Rose” learned from nature and
the summer garden. The old original page was from the book cover, and I just taped it in between two pages of the journal to add character. I think it’s the perfect home for this quote and a dried flower.
This page is printed on vellum and folded to create pockets that hold an embossed journaling card and some rose quote tags. I love using vellum to add character and that wonderful crinkly sound it makes.
Embossed paint sample cards with color titles that go with the garden theme add another design element and provide journaling space with coffee dyed paper glued to the back. The opposite page features a wrap-around that showcases one of my favorite images from the kit. I added a quote to the bottom. The other side of the wrap is layered with a distressed wood image and a coffee filter ruffle to create a pocket that holds an embossed bookmark. A tutorial (by Dody) on how to make the coffee filter ruffles can be found on the website also. I love the beautiful floral image on the pocket of the next page, which is home for another embossed paint sample card.
Here you can see the linen fabric that I sewed the two signatures into. The quote serves as a tuck spot for these circle tags. I created a photo album page with one I printed from the website.
I imagine that the beautiful image is “Rose” as she was becoming a young lady. I added a very old vintage piece of lace and a sparkly butterfly to the corners of the album page. The pocket I
created inside of the album page holds a cute little mini-journal, accented with more gold foil and a bird feather.
The center of the second signature features these stunning wallpaper pages that are hinged with lace to open out, revealing embossed coffee-dyed background pages.
A lovely butterfly embellished with a coffee filter ruffle became a sweet tuck spot to slide this “Secret Garden” bookmark. It really stands out against the embossed background page.
I used the gorgeous postcards and tags from the Roses and Bees kits to add journaling cards. This page spread is one of my favorites because of the torn-edge corner pocket made with a wallpaper image.
Thank you so much for being here! I hope you enjoyed seeing my project. If you want to see more of this journal, be sure to watch the video for a complete flip-through. You can find all of
