7 Vintage ABC Charts
Today we have a charming collection of Vintage ABC Charts! If you are like me, these bring back memories of the wall hanging in Elementary School that taught us the ABC’s… a long, time ago! Anyhow, these old Alphabet Diagram Ephemera pieces are quite interesting. A couple of them have ampersands on them and one even has the ‘&c.’ abbreviation for et cetera. We have a marvelous collection of Wooden Block Letters with corresponding illustrations plus a beautiful Victorian Alphabet Sampler with red letters. All of these seen below surely would be fun for your Collage or Card Making projects! They would make great ATC backgrounds as well!
Old Alphabet Charts
Pictured above is an awesome Victorian ABC chart. This is such a cute piece! The letters are all in capitals and written in bright red. There are eye-catching black outlines around each letter. The outlines are a little offset to give them an engraved look and feel. Included is also an ampersand. I love the sepia tones and the little imperfections from age on this one. This is a from my best girlfriend’s collection. Make sure you click on this graphic to bring up the largest size.
Featured above is an amazing page from an early Children’s Alphabet book. These letters appear to be carved wood block letters. The ‘Dame Wonders Pictures’ have tiny illustrations of characters that match the corresponding letter. There is a fascinating variety of images depicted, including an owl, people in different poses, a windmill, and a violin! Be sure to enlarge this one to see all of the amazing details. I adore the typography on this antique piece. It really is amusing, just like the banner at the bottom says!
Vintage ABC Charts from Books
Here we have an amazing Roman Letters Alphabet Chart from an old book. This is an ABC page from ‘Sanders’ Union Reader.’ Published in late 1800’s, the superb series of books had a variety of exercises in reading, and each page had a beautiful illustration. I find it interesting that it includes an ampersand (&) and the abbreviation for et cetera (&c.) This page has a scattered area of foxing for those who love aged ephemera. It is unusual in that it has two ampersands, one of which is followed by c and a period.
Shown here is an antique ABC Chart entitled ‘The Alphabet.’ This appears to be a page from an old book by the wear and tear along one edge. This example has both Uppercase and Lowercase Letters side by side. This one has essentially the same format as the one I recall from the First grade if my memory is correct. There is great age to this piece of ephemera along with spills, splotches, and dark areas on the right side of the piece.
