Distressed Garden Box – DIY
Today I’m sharing another fabulous DIY project from one of our Readers! This fabulous Distressed Herb Garden Box was created by Dyan Cross!
Here’s what Dyan had to say about this project “My niece saw several long boxes online and wanted me to make one for her dining table. She will put seasonal decorations in, such as hydrangeas for summer, pumpkins for fall, etc. For someone with basic woodworking skills, this was surprisingly easy and my cost was only $10 for the wood. (I had the other supplies on hand, such as chalk paint, wax, stain, etc. The cost would increase if these items had to be purchased). I had a lot of fun doing this, and my niece was thrilled!”
Supplies:
1) A 1 x 6 x 10 Wooden Board
2) Wood Glue
3) Brad Nailer
4)Stain
5) Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
6) Wax
7) Sandpaper
8) Mod Podge
9) Assorted Hardware
10) TGF French Herb Shop Transfer
Steps:
Step 1) Cut wood for box: 2 pieces 36″ long for sides, 1 piece 34 1/2″ long for bottom, 2 pieces 5 1/2″ long for edges. Assemble box using wood glue and brad nailer. (Attach long sides to bottom, leaving 3/4″ on each end for side pieces; then attach side pieces).
Step 2) Stain box with walnut stain, and wipe quickly, so box isn’t too dark. When dry, brush with white chalk paint, leaving a good bit of stain visible. When paint is dry, sand box to distress. Wipe box well.
Step 3) Print Graphics Fairy image in REVERSE using a LASER printer (not ink jet). Brush the right side with Mod Podge, and lay face down on wood box. Smooth with credit card and let dry several hours. When dry, dampen image, and carefully rub your finger over paper – it will start rolling up and you can remove the paper, leaving the image on the wood. Wipe a thin coat of wax for chalk paint over image and entire box. Let dry and buff.
Step 4) Attach assorted hardware. I dropped zinc-coated pieces in vinegar for several hours to age, and attached with small dark screws. The side pieces are white colored metal strapping that I sanded.
Thanks so much for submitting such a fabulous project Dyan!! I bet it looks great on your nieces dining room table! I hope you guys enjoyed this fun Tutorial!
