Old French Sheet Music
This is a delightful piece of antique French Sheet music! I found this sheet music glued onto a piece of cardboard. It appears to be music for a clarinet. It reads in French, “Valse Mazurka” by A. Lamielle. I love that the musical notes are hand written! The sepia colors and aging at the edges makes this piece so nice for collage or mixed media art pieces.
Here we have another nice page of old French Sheet music. The title reads: “La Baul des Fougeres.” Fougeres is a town in the Brittany region of France that is named after a fern! Handwritten, the script is just beautiful on this one with even one large flourish! Rounded corners of the lovely sepia toned piece of ephemera along with a nice round edged frame make it extra nice.

Featured here is a wondrous printable of some antique sheet music that my friend Marian lent me. Thanks Marian! Translating this ephemera to English, it means “Every art is best taught by example.” It is a great quote from Dr. Samuel Johnson. Old sheet music like this looks great as drawer liner paper!
Isn’t this lovely?! Above is an antique French Postcard, or Carte Postale, circa 1898, that has this French Sheet music on the front! The song is called “Envoi de Fleurs” (Sending Flowers). I researched this one a bit; it was originally written in the 1860’s, and I actually found a recording of it on You Tube. You can listen to this charming song HERE if you would like to hear it!

Actually, I think “Basse” is not a person’s name. Looking at the music and my knowledge of musical matters, I feel certain that this is music for a bass viol.
Keep up the good work.
Karen Watson says
Thanks so much Frith! I have corrected it in the post.

Hi Karen! Just a passing thought; I think the music that is glued to the boards may have been for something like a marching band, you know how sometimes you see them with it on a clippy thing that is attached to their instruments? And I’m pretty sure the “Basse” is for the bass part, not the guy who wrote it!
I do love all of the old sheet music you are so kind to share with us. Thanks again!! Shauna

Hi Shauna, oh yes, that makes perfect sense! Thanks for sharing that, I think you are probably right.

Hi James, I’m sorry but I have been ill lately, so I was not able to get to the comments until now. You don’t need to leave a comment in order to print the images, you can print them out at any time.

Hi Karen,
I love your images! They are so beautiful, thanks a lot for sharing them!! I have a comment: there is an antique French sheet music piece, and it is incorrectly labeled as “Salse Mazurka.” It should be “Valse Mazurka.” Sometimes, it’s hard to read that kind of writing.
Karen Watson says
Hi Martha, Thank you so much for letting me know!
